Check-Off Loans in Kenya: Salary Loans Explained (2026)

If you're employed in Kenya and need an affordable loan, a check-off loan is one of the cheapest and easiest options available. Repayments come straight out of your salary, so there's no collateral and no chasing — just a simple monthly deduction. Here's how check-off loans work in Kenya in 2026.

What is a check-off loan?

A check-off loan (also called a salary loan or payroll loan) is a loan repaid through an agreed deduction from your monthly salary. Your employer remits the instalment directly to the lender before your pay reaches you. Because repayment is reliable and automatic, lenders can offer lower rates and skip the need for physical security.

How much can you borrow?

At Fantom Capital employed Kenyans can borrow from KES 20,000 up to KES 3 million, depending on your net salary and how much room you have for a deduction. As a rule, your total loan deductions shouldn't push you past the legal one-third basic-salary limit — this protects you from over-borrowing.

How a check-off loan works, step by step

  1. Apply online with your employment and salary details.
  2. Affordability check — we confirm your net pay and existing deductions.
  3. Employer confirmation of the check-off arrangement.
  4. Approval & disbursement to your bank account or M-Pesa, usually within 24 hours.
  5. Automatic repayment from your salary each month until cleared.

Who qualifies?

  • You are in permanent or pensionable employment (or on a long contract).
  • Your employer operates a check-off / payroll-deduction arrangement.
  • You have a valid National ID and KRA PIN.
  • Your net salary comfortably covers the new deduction.

Documents you'll need

  • National ID and KRA PIN.
  • Recent payslips (usually the last 3 months).
  • 3–6 months' bank statements showing salary credits.
  • A letter or confirmation from your employer's HR.

Check-off loan vs other loans

If you're not in formal employment, a salary deduction won't work — but you can still borrow against an asset. Compare a logbook loan against your car (see how logbook loans work in Kenya) or a landlord loan against property (see landlord loans in Kenya).
